You cannot tell whether aquamarine is natural, laboratory-grown or an imitation from color, sparkle, inclusions, a phone photo or one home test. Start with the exact claim, then check whether the product wording, selected item, seller records and document scope support it. Use professional identification when the value, uncertainty or dispute justifies the cost.
Do not scratch, burn, drop or expose a ring to acids, solvents or household chemicals. Fog, temperature-by-touch and phone-app tests are also unreliable. They can damage the stone, treatment, metal or setting without producing a defensible answer.
The Short Answer
Replace “Is it real?” with four separate questions:
- Material: is the stone aquamarine, which is the blue to green-blue variety of beryl, or a different material?
- Origin: did it form in the earth, or was it produced in a laboratory?
- Treatment: has its color, clarity or another property been altered?
- Item match: do the listing, selected configuration and documents describe the stone you will receive?
These are related questions, but one answer does not settle the others. A natural aquamarine may be treated. Laboratory-grown aquamarine is not mined, but it is a different category from an imitation. A correctly labeled blue topaz is genuine blue topaz; it becomes a problem only if it is represented as aquamarine.

Use This Five-Level Evidence Check
Confidence should come from a chain of matching evidence, not from one impressive-looking clue.

Move upward only after the lower layers match. A photograph can show design and visible appearance, but it cannot replace material disclosure or testing.
1. Read the exact material and origin wording
Look for the center-stone material, natural or laboratory origin, treatment disclosure, carat weight, millimeter dimensions, metal and side stones. Compare the title, specification table, option selector, cart and order summary. If a listing switches among “aquamarine,” “blue crystal,” “birthstone” and “simulated aquamarine,” ask the seller to name the material before buying.
2. Match the claim to the selected item
Confirm whether the photographs show the exact item, a representative sample from the same specification, or only the design. Record the selected metal, size and stone options. An honest sample-image disclosure does not identify the mineral, but it prevents a design photograph from being mistaken for exact-item evidence.
3. Keep the seller and transaction record
Save the product page, written answers, order configuration, receipt and the policy version that applies. Seller contact details and a usable resolution process do not prove gemstone identity; they preserve what was represented if the delivered item conflicts with the listing.
4. Match any document to the stone
Record the issuer, document type, report number, measurements, photograph and statements actually made. A card placed beside a ring is not automatically an independent laboratory report, and a report for one stone does not cover a different item.
5. Escalate when the stakes justify it
Independent examination becomes more useful when a stone is high-value, unusually large, sold with a premium natural claim, inherited, being insured or involved in a dispute. Before submitting it, ask the gemologist or laboratory what the examination can answer and whether the mounting creates limits.
What Appearance Can—and Cannot—Tell You
GIA describes aquamarine as pastel blue, greenish blue or green-blue and notes that most faceted aquamarines are free of eye-visible inclusions. That makes two common shortcuts unreliable:
- a clean-looking stone is not automatically laboratory-grown or imitation;
- visible inclusions do not automatically prove natural origin.
Color intensity is also not a home identification test. Pale color does not prove aquamarine, and a strong blue does not by itself prove treatment or imitation. Cut, size, lighting, background, white balance, exposure and editing can all change how blue and transparent a stone appears.
A photo is useful for documenting shape, setting and visible condition. It cannot measure refractive index, spectrum, density or growth features, so it cannot establish material identity, growth origin or treatment by itself.

The FTC's gemstone advertising guidance says laboratory-grown or laboratory-created wording should clearly disclose that the stone is not mined. It also says those terms should not be used for a named gemstone unless the material has essentially the same optical, physical and chemical properties as the mined stone. Imitation wording should be clear and conspicuous. Treatment disclosure is important when permanence, special care or a significant effect on value is involved.
This is why “lab-grown” is not a softer synonym for imitation, and “natural” is not a synonym for untreated.
Common Aquamarine Look-Alikes
Several materials can overlap aquamarine's visible color in an online listing or casual viewing.

A Clorosea Listing Example: Image Versus Specification
At the time of this review, one current Clorosea product page separately states “Stone Material: Aquamarine” and “Origin: Lab Grown” for the primary stone. That wording is more useful than the photograph for understanding the seller's material and origin claim. It is still a seller disclosure, not an independent laboratory finding.
Use the same reading method on any listing: find the material, origin, treatment, measurements, side stones and selected option in writing. If one field is missing or contradictory, ask for clarification rather than trying to solve it from the image.

These documents can all be useful, but they do different jobs.

When Professional Identification Is Worth It
GIA's current Colored Stone Reports & Services says its Colored Stone Identification Report identifies and describes polished loose or mounted material and lists detectable treatments. GIA's aquamarine buyer's guide adds that an aquamarine report can state whether the submitted stone is natural or laboratory-grown and name detectable treatments.
The limits matter as much as the result:
- “detectable treatments” does not mean every possible treatment is detectable in every item;
- a mounting can limit weight and some observations;
- an identification report is not automatically a market-value opinion;
- GIA evaluates aquamarine but does not issue a diamond-style quality grade for it;
- GIA's current geographic-origin report list does not include aquamarine, so do not assume an identification report proves a mine or country claim.
Before paying for a service, name the question you need answered: material identity, natural or laboratory origin, detectable treatment, condition, value or a transaction dispute. The right professional and document depend on the question.

Warning Signs That Deserve a Follow-Up
- The seller will not state natural, laboratory-grown, imitation or treatment status.
- The listing uses several material names for the same center stone.
- A “certificate” appears without an issuer, tested item or explanation of scope.
- Marketing copy makes an origin, treatment or independent-report claim that does not appear in the specification.
- Heavily edited images are the only evidence; dimensions and side or back views are missing.
- The seller calls a stone natural only because it has inclusions or calls it laboratory-grown only because it looks clean.
- The written policy, order configuration or contact route is missing or contradictory.
A warning sign is a reason to request evidence, not proof of fraud. A lower price may reflect laboratory-grown material, a different metal, a smaller size, simpler construction or another legitimate difference.

Can you tell if aquamarine is real from a photo?
No. A photo can show color, shape, setting and visible features, but it cannot reliably establish mineral identity, natural or laboratory origin or treatment.
Does natural aquamarine have inclusions?
It can, but GIA notes that most faceted aquamarines are eye-clean. Inclusions may contribute to a professional examination; their presence or absence alone is not proof.
Is blue topaz fake aquamarine?
